Along the Way

We are bleeding heart liberals
and right wingers,
mothers of one
and mothers of many,
though none of that really matters
when you meet with babies in your arms
and dark circles under your eyes.

Our commonality,
at first,
was our children.
We were lonely together.
Until together made lonely go away.

We were strangers to each other.
we need each other,
we rely on each other,
we cheerlead each other
through worries about kids, husbands, parents.

We are Ya-Yas in the making.
We help each other
with extra hands,
tuned ears,
open hearts,
dreaming, planning, surviving.

When your child is sweet, I tell you.
When my child is rude, you laugh with me.
When we make it through the years with young children,
we’ll high five and say,
“Thank goodness for you along the way.”
